Freelancer: Default class. Unlike the Onion Knight in the Famicom version, able to use a wide array of weapons, but can only use level 1 black and white magic.
Warrior: A general purpose fighter, specializing in attack power. Warriors can sacrifice defense and evasion in order to deal extra damage to an enemy.
Monk: A martial artist who grows in attack quickly. Monks are able to retaliate against all enemies that deal physical damage against them (in the same turn) via their special ability.
White Mage: A basic white (healing / support) magic user, capable of using level 1-7 white magic.
Black Mage: A basic black (offensive) magic user, capable of using level 1-7 black magic.
Red Mage: A novice mage that can use both black and white magic, as well as an impressive arsenal of equipment. However, Red Mages cannot use level 6, 7, or 8 spells, and also have significantly fewer MP (magic points) at every spell level than Black Mages and White Mages.
Thief: An extremely fast rogue who can raise the defense of himself and his allies while running, open locked doors, and steal items, and in very rare cases, equipment, from his enemies.
Ranger: A warrior proficient in the use of bows and ranged weapons. The Ranger is able to launch a ranged volley, striking multiple foes at once.
Knight: A general purpose fighter, specializing in defense and deflecting fatal blows from other party members. Knights are also capable of using level 1 white magic.
Scholar: A researcher who is able to analyze enemies in order to determine weaknesses. Scholars are also able to use the first three levels of white and black magic, and double the effect of any items which are used.
Geomancer: Working with nature and the elements, the Geomancer is able to channel magic power from his surroundings to attack his enemies with random magic effects.
Viking: A slow-growing warrior who is proficient in the use of heavy weapons, such as axes and hammers.
Dragoon: A class that fights with spears and is able to leap high into the air to deal extra damage the following turn. The Dragoon evades all attacks while in the air.
Black Belt: A strong class similar to the Monk, capable of concentrating attack power to perform double-strength and triple-strength attacks.
Dark Knight: A warrior proficient in the use of Dark Swords, which cause enhanced damage to replicating enemies. Dark Knights also has the "souleater" ability, which lets them to attack all enemies by sacrificing health.
Evoker: A novice user of summoning magic. When summoning, Evokers randomly select either the black magic effect or the white magic effect for a given level.
Bard: A musician who can achieve magical effects through the use of harp and song.
Magus: An expert black magic user, able to use the higher level spells more often, and able to use level 8 black magic.
Devout: An expert white magic user, able to use the higher level spells frequently, as well as being able to level 8 white magic.
Summoner: A master of summoning magic. When summoning creatures, Summoners uses High Summons, which provide very powerful offensive magic effects.
Sage: A hybrid capable of using every white, black, and summoning spell available. Although possessing fewer higher level MP, Sages have more MP for lower-level spells than other advanced class. Sages are unable to use the High Summon magic effects, but rather randomly switch between the white and black magic effects (similar to the Evoker).
Ninja: The Ninja is capable of using many weapons and armor and also has the unique ability to throw weapons, although doing so destroys them. Also Ninjas can use the powerful Dark Blades. Ninjas are most effective at throwing the rare shurikens.
Onion Knight: Hidden in the DS version. The Onion Knight is the only class that can use onion equipment, and whose attributes experience explosive growth between the 93rd and 99th level. They can also use any weapon and equipment excluding Job Mastery equipment. Onion Knights can use any magic spells or equipment normally reserved for other classes, with the sole exception of Summon-class magic (useable only by Evokers, Summoners and Sages).
